Introduction

Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical element on the planet; it is present in 75% of matter. It is rapidly gaining prominence in the sustainable energy sector, with 2024 presenting numerous investment opportunities. The industry’s growth, especially in the United States and Europe, is propelled by significant policy support and technological advancements. The Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment in the U.S. and the European Union’s ambitious Hydrogen Strategy under the European Green Deal are key drivers of this trend. These strategies are a central discussion point at global forums like the Global Investment Leaders Club meetings and the Private Investment Forum Worldwide, reflecting their importance in shaping the future of hydrogen energy.

“Having been a member for a while, I find that attending GILC meetings is like attending a family reunion. It’s a wonderful environment for networking, engaging with this exceptional community

1 – Hydrogen’s Investment Potential In Sustainable Energy

Hydrogen is quickly gaining ground as a key investment option in the realm of sustainable energy. Its flexibility and ability to outdo traditional energy investments are making it a key player in the energy market. The technology for green hydrogen production is advancing rapidly, particularly in the area of electrolysis, which is essential for splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen gas.

* Green hydrogen is achieved through a process of electrolysis powered by renewable energies such as wind or solar. Electrolysis involves using an electrical current to break down the water molecule into oxygen and hydrogen by electrodes.

There is a significant push, especially in Europe, to make green hydrogen cost-competitive. Despite being in its early stages, the industry is witnessing a surge in investments directed towards crucial technologies like electrolysers. The growth of the hydrogen industry is really turning heads, especially when you look at the numbers. In 2022, the amount of money poured into hydrogen through mergers and acquisitions reached a whopping $24.4 billion, a huge 288% increase from the year before. The market was bustling with action too, with over 393 deals made, up from 277 in 2021. This shows just how much interest and investment hydrogen is drawing in.

A noteworthy example is a fund managed by KGAL, backed by the German development finance institution KfW, aimed at fostering green hydrogen development, particularly in economies transitioning to sustainable energy sources. These combined efforts underscore the hydrogen sector’s potential, offering prime investment opportunities and a pathway toward a sustainable energy future.

Jude Pereira, MD at Nanjgel Solutions, UK, captures the essence of this shift during a recent G.I.L.C gathering. He likens hydrogen to a new form of gold, surpassing traditional commodities in its potential and profitability. “All of a sudden, we have got new commodities that are much better than gold, much more healthy and profitable than these top three trends that people talk about,” Jude says. He emphasises the unexpected turn in the market where the focus has shifted from popular electric vehicles to hydrogen-based solutions.

2 – Hydrogen’s Growing Role in Renewable Energy Landscape

Hydrogen, particularly its green variant, is not only transforming the renewable energy landscape but also presenting substantial investment opportunities in energy storage and decarbonization of industries reliant on fossil fuels.

To be turned into energy, hydrogen stored in specific tanks is channelled into a fuel cell. There it binds with oxygen from the air and electricity is obtained! Thus, the only by-product of the process is water.

This transformation is creating a burgeoning market for innovative energy solutions. On a global scale, green hydrogen is attracting significant attention and is anticipated to play a vital role in the energy market. It’s projected to meet 10% of total final energy consumption by 2050, indicating a major opportunity for forward-looking investors. In 2023, the U.S. experienced a notable increase in green hydrogen initiatives, showcasing its diverse potential. Similarly, Europe is making strides in this area, with the European Union’s ambitious Hydrogen Strategy, part of the European Green Deal, focused on escalating green hydrogen production and infrastructure — a key area for investment. These developments in both the U.S. and Europe underscore the growing investment potential of green hydrogen in fostering a sustainable energy future.

One of the most significant roles of hydrogen is its integration into renewable energy systems, offering lucrative opportunities for investment. For example, Duke Energy’s ambitious project in Florida, set to be operational in 2024, is a standout instance. This project, involving the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis using solar energy, demonstrates a pioneering approach to integrating hydrogen production with renewable sources, presenting a model ripe for investment. Initiatives like these not only exemplify hydrogen’s practical applications in enhancing renewable systems but also highlight its capacity to revolutionise energy storage and distribution, opening new paths for investors.

Investors like Anthony Jarrin, CEO at The Cannaregio Group, US, are closely monitoring the unfolding narrative of hydrogen in the renewable sector. Speaking at a Global Investment Leaders Club event, Jarrin expressed his insights on hydrogen’s potential: “The growth of hydrogen investments is not just intriguing, it’s pivotal for the renewable sector. Hydrogen, especially green hydrogen, is a game-changer, offering a sustainable solution where other renewables face limitations.

This view is supported by experts analysing hydrogen’s potential to revolutionise industries traditionally dependent on coal, such as steel manufacturing. Bob, who brings four decades of expertise as a manager of a steel plant in the U.S., offers a nuanced perspective. He notes that while natural gas is currently the most cost-efficient method for hydrogen production, there is a strong, ongoing effort to develop green hydrogen in a financially viable way. He predicts that this utopia or solution can be achieved in the US within 15 years from now, while in Europe it can be achieved earlier, since they have put more time and resources into developing this solution.

My experience with the Global Investment Leaders Club has been incredible. It’s provided a remarkable platform to connect with outstanding professionals, leaders, and decision-makers.

3 – Hydrogen in Transportation: Opportunities Beyond Electric Vehicles

Hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a key investment area in sustainable mobility, offering distinct advantages over electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in sectors that are challenging to electrify, such as heavy industry and transportation. This emerging market is attracting investors due to its versatility and applicability in areas like shipping, aviation, and long-haul trucking. Here, hydrogen is not just a direct fuel but also a crucial component for producing synthetic fuels, representing a diverse range of investment opportunities. The U.S. Department of Energy’s commitment to invest $7 billion in creating regional clean hydrogen hubs is a testament to the nation’s dedication to hydrogen infrastructure. This significant investment underscores a burgeoning market and opens up numerous investment avenues, particularly in infrastructure development and technology innovation. This move not only propels the hydrogen economy forward but also presents a spectrum of investment possibilities, from infrastructure projects to advanced hydrogen technologies.

Jude Pereira, MD at Nanjgel Solutions, UK, highlights hydrogen’s edge over EVs, especially in terms of sustainability and efficiency in long-distance travel. He points out the limitations of lithium batteries in EVs, such as high replacement costs and safety concerns. “Electric vehicles came out with the right intentions, but hydrogen presents a more viable solution for sustainable mobility,” he explains during an insightful discussion that took place at a GILC gathering. Jude also notes hydrogen’s growing role in urban transport, with cities increasingly adopting hydrogen-fueled taxis, and its dual status as both a utility and a commodity.

Hydrogen’s role in sustainable mobility extends beyond being a petrol alternative, offering a versatile and efficient solution for diverse applications. This positions it as a key investment area within the sustainable energy and transportation sectors.

From my experience at the Global Investment Leaders Club, I can say that every meeting presents not just networking opportunities with interesting people, but also serves as a platform for learning and personal development.

– Jude Pereira, MD at Nanjgel Solutions, UK
